Match Report

In spite of all the talk about the invincibility of Saint Colman’s they were never in with a chance that is after Kilkenny had got over their early slackness and after they had countered Saint Colman’s second half rally.

Even though the Fermoy boys made good use of the looseness in the Kilkenny defence in the first ten minutes both teams were slow to settle down and hurling did not reach top class until the end of the first quarter.

Playing against the wind in the first half Saint Kieran’s scored a goal and six points as against a goal and a point for Saint Colmans.  They also scored a goal and six points when having the wind in their favour.  Both teams got the same scores in each half – Saint Kieran’s 1-6, Saint Colman’s 1-1, which meant that St Kieran’s got fourteen scores to St. Coleman’s four.

St. Colman’s had a goal and a point in the first ten minutes of the match before St Kieran’s opened their account.  From this to the end of the first half the Cork boys never raised the flag. St Kieran’s lead by five points at half time (1-6 to 1-1)

A goal and a point early in the second half for St. Colman’s narrowed the gap.  St Colman’s effort stopped there while they never got a score for the remainder of the game, St Kieran’s added a goal and six points.

Good for Kieran’s were Lar Dunphy and Tom Connolly in midfield while the backs of Kieran Crotty and Willie Doyle were also very strong.
